Understanding the Remy Warranty Returns Process

Remy shares some insight to help relieve some frustration when a freshly installed remanufactured component does not work.

Remanufactured parts are built to fulfil a similar function to the original part after a stringent manufacturing process. Misconceptions persist as many people still believe that remanufactured products are not as reliable as new ones. Remanufacturers like Remy continue to disprove these fallacies.

Remy’s unique remanufacturing process ensures that every single alternator and starter must pass an end-of-line test on a state-of-the-art bench to ensure it is working properly. The 3-year, no quibble warranty on their starters and alternators (on parts with no labour), is Remy’s demonstration of confidence in their products.


All warranty returns are analysed for the purpose of detecting where the performance shortfalls are for future quality control measures. Through this, Remy has discovered that eight in ten returns are false failures.

False failures refer to clams arising due to a fault elsewhere in the vehicle, or because of handling/installation error. As a result, Remy does dedicate a considerable amount of time to help customers understand the product better.


In order to ensure that the alternator or starter is not being returned on a false failure, Remy encourages technicians to perform some basic checks before filing a warranty claim:

• Does the vehicle have a fully charged battery?
• Are the belt and tensioners in good condition?
• Are cable connections clean and are cables undamaged?


Although starters and alternators have not changed in appearance for many years, the way they communicate with vehicles have changed. Earlier alternators were regulated by an integrated or external regulator which was directly linked to the battery voltage. Modern alternators are regulated by an onboard computer (CPU) which processes information from other parts of the vehicle.

The voltage is totally controlled and set by the CPU. The most complex and the most advanced communication protocols are LIN and BSS protocols. These protocols are said to be “smart” because they control and set more than just the voltage regulation. The communication between the CPU and the alternator is a two-way flow. The alternator can answer the CPU’s questions.

When the alternator is in perfect working condition but when the communication between the CPU and the alternator is interrupted, the technician will assume the alternator isn’t working.


When it comes to reducing the number of unnecessary returns, additional handling and dissatisfied customers, it is important to recognise that the core issue may not be the alternator or starter.
