Klarius DPFs Reducing Your Carbon Footprint

Klarius explains why we must all take note of the DPF MOT change.

As of February 2014, the MOT test for diesel cars tightened up to ensure that a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) is still in place on vehicles originally fitted with them at the time of manufacture.

DPFs have become standard fitment in recent years, making diesel cars much cleaner in order to meet the increasingly stringent Euro emissions standards. DPFs reduce harmful emissions by capturing soot from exhaust gasses which are then burned away in a controlled manner. If part of this system fails, the filter can quickly become blocked due to a lack of ‘regeneration’ which leads to failure, replacement and often a very costly repair job for the customer.

In order to avoid the high cost of replacing a DPF, many owners have chosen the increasingly popular solution of ‘DPF Deletes’. In this scenario, the risk of blockages is eliminated, as filters are completely removed along with some re-programming of the ECU. ‘Deletes’ are typically half the cost of a new DPF and can in some cases slightly improve fuel economy & performance. The downside however, is that the vehicle is much more polluting (not meeting EU standards) and will now fail the MOT.
