Since the start of this year, FPS employees have followed Andrew’s journey via his monthly blog posts on the company’s intranet and in the local as well as national press.
Andrew had a series of successes last year including winning a Silver medal at the 2011 European Junior Athletics Championships in Tallinn and beating his senior rivals in the 110m hurdles to win the McCain UK Challenge Senior Final. He went on to win “Outstanding Athlete of the Year” at the UK Athletics Awards. This attracted local sponsor FPS who will be lending Andrew a car to help him over some of the hurdles in his increasingly hectic life balance.
Andrew has continued to rack up achievements recently at the World Indoor Championships in Istanbul where he set a new personal best in the 60m hurdles of 7.56 seconds and returned with the scalp of former world Olympic champion Liu Xiang, having pipped him to victory in his heat. These results are made all the more impressive by the fact that Andrew was the only British male sprint hurdler selected to go to these Championships.
Andrew’s schedule has been filling up fast this year and to show our continued support of the 19 year old athlete and his achievements, on Friday we handed over the keys to a car on loan to him for the next three years.
The car (Citroen C3) will be owned by FPS who will also be covering the running costs. It gives Andrew the tool that he so desperately requires as he balances a professional career in Track and Field Athletics for Great Britain that he trains for in Bath, with a full time undergraduate degree in Business Studies at the University of the West of England, Bristol. Andrew told FPS,
“This really will be an invaluable tool for me as I have to commute from Bristol to Bath six times a week, I am so grateful to have this kind of local support.”
Managing Director Neil Davis handed over the keys to Andrew at midday in front of our Bridge House centre on Timothy’s Bridge road on Friday 16th March.
