A certain level of softness is important to help a sliding bearing bed-in during an engine’s running-in phase. Yet, for the rest of the engine’s life the bearing needs to be hard to remain durable. Strength in Layers
The Glyco-188 bearing material features a layered construction of bronze and tin-nickel, which is applied to a steel spine. The nickel layer between the bronze and tin-nickel prevents the tin atoms from diffusing into the bronze layer. Advanced production methods are used to add an extra layer of tin and copper; this combination works to achieve the perfect balance of durability and malleability.
A Transformative Process
The initial softness enables the bearing to bed-in successfully and adjust to the surface structure of the crankshaft, a process which is also assisted by the heat from the engine. Over time, the nickel layer atoms and the tin atoms diffuse to build up the tin-nickel layer, which then becomes harder, more durable and more fatigue resistant. This results in a bearing material which resists very high loads, avoids deformation, and meets the need for a lead-free solution.
