The Rhinos were up against the season’s team to beat, Castleford Tigers, but ultimately it was Leeds Rhinos’ experience that made the difference. The Tigers were making their first ever appearance in rugby league’s showpiece event, while this was the Rhinos’ tenth Grand Final.
Two tries apiece from winger Tom Briscoe and the outgoing Danny McGuire, plus three conversions from Kallum Watkins and two McGuire drop goals, gave the Rhinos a 24-0 lead with three minutes to play. A 79th minute try from Castleford’s Alex Foster, converted by this season’s Man of Steel Luke Gale, was the Tigers’ only response as the Rhinos overpowered the 2017 Super League table toppers.
The game was the perfect send off for McGuire and the retiring Rob Burrow, with McGuire’s sublime performance also earning him the Man of the Match award as the stand-off guided Leeds to a record-extending eighth Super League title. Both players made their Leeds debuts in 2001 and have been stalwarts of the club ever since. While McGuire is moving on to Hull KR, Burrow is hanging up his boots but will remain at the Rhinos to take up a role in the player performance department at Headingley.
Speaking after the match, McGuire described his side’s ‘perfect’ performance: “It is a massive achievement and probably something that won’t sink in until things quieten down.”
Burrow, who came on for the final 17 minutes, said of his final game: “I’ve been very lucky to be involved with some special players. Just to win one trophy would have been something but to have won the amount I have over my career is something I never expected. I’ve really enjoyed my career. I didn’t want to go on too long. I’m really happy to go out like this.”
